One for me, one for them
The idea of building for others vs building for yourself. Or put another way, client work vs. YOUR work.
You can probably relate to this feeling...
The last several months were a blur - you have a full to-do list, several people waiting to hear back from you, and a backlog of editing work.
It's not a bad thing - money is coming in and things are happening - but your not feeling particularly fired up about it either.
For me, this has become a signal that I need to refocus attention back onto personal projects and ask myself, "What do I want to be doing instead?"
The balance of making art and making money.
"One for me, one for them" is a phrase that's thrown around in the film industry by actors and directors.
"One for me" means working on something for your own artistic satisfaction. You make it selfishly. You make it because YOU want to make it.
"One for them" is when you make something in an exchange. You make it for a client, you make it commercially, you make it for a wide audience.
Making for "Them" is your fuel. It gives you resources, connections, and $$$.
This concept can apply even if you aren't a full time creative. It can be helpful to think about your time in general in these terms.
Your 9-5 might be for them, but use your 5pm-9pm to build for YOU.
